Provincial contest
The Royal Canadian Legion conducts its Public Speaking contests to give students the opportunity to become more comfortable and effective in front of an audience.
The Public Speaking contest is administered by the provincial commands. Ontario Command has structured its contest on a Branch (if able) – Zone – District – Area (more than one district) – Provincial sequence.
Public Speaking is the art of delivering a live, structured message to an audience to inform, persuade or entertain.
2026 Important dates
- Zone G5: Sat, March 14 at 462 Eastview located at 294 Cyr Ave.
- District G: Sat, March 28 at 638 Kanata located at 70 Hines Rd.
- Area (Districts F+G):
- Province of Ontario: Sat, May 2 at 137 Napanee (FB) located at 26 Mill St E.
Public Speaking Contest guidelines
- Open to all students in Grades 1 to 12.
- Speeches can be in either English or French.
- Topic for the speech is the Student’s Choice (i.e. whatever the student wishes to speak about).
Hint: Student should choose a topic that will grab the attention of the audience and judges. - Students may change their topic up to the final registration date.
- Time length for speeches are as follows:
a. Grades 1 to 9 – 3 to 5 minutes
b. Grades 10 to 12 – 5 to 7 minutes - Zone winners in each category will advance to the District level.
- District winners in each category will advance to the Area level.
- The winning student at Area in each speaking category and one parent will be offered an all – expenses paid trip to the site of the Provincial finals.
Zone G5 Registration
- Initial registration is done by email and final registration is done on the day of the Zone public speaking contest.
- Registration forms will be accepted on a first-come first-served basis and should be sent in PDF format by e-mail as indicated below.
- All schools in the Zone G5 area were sent an email with an invitation letter and registration forms. For those students who were not informed by their schools of the opportunity to participate, please click on the buttons for the Ontario Command documents.
